The introduction to stick making came by chance when I made a rudimentary walking stick to aid my brother during a period of illness. I made him a stick with some simple carved features based on his love of music for which he was very pleased, but I knew I could do better.
So, I did some reading and research and made a couple of sticks to gain insight into the proper way to construct a walking stick. After that, I started to add my own ideas to make them unique and attractive and they started to sell. Since then, I have taken on many commissions and expanded my portfolio.
Stick making has become addictive and turned into a passion where I can be creative and hone my skills as a woodcarver and I get to work on some interesting projects.
The main bulk of my work focuses around carved animals usually carved from photographs supplied by the client, where we work together to produce a likeness and a keepsake.
Many of the dogs have passed on and the sticks are a reminder of a loved pet. These are very special projects and I get a great sense of achievement from my numerous satisfied customers.
